Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
How are you celebrating the day?  I enjoyed seeing & reading how my Facebook friends are commemorating the Irish holiday.  Several people posted pictures of themselves and/or their children decked out in green.  Some even donned elaborate costumes.  Many appear to be enjoying each others company via the local Irish pub, downing the green suds!  Friends in Chicago reported that the river is dyed a "different" deeper shade of green.  Those reporting from the San Antonio River Walk also experienced the dying of the river.  I am thinking of my maternal grandmother today.  She celebrated her birthday on St. Patty's Day.  She also had Irish blood, so I recall fond memories of green celebrations, shamrock cakes, & Irish music to honor her this time of year.  I also have fond memories of "What Bernie Did to Win an Irish Jersey" at McGuinness Irish Pub in Appleton.  Only a few of you may have been privy to that moment, but I am sure it will bring about a smile! Whatever you are doing today, I hope it's memorable!

Although I cannot partake in the green beer ritual this year, I decided to make my own "Irish HMR shake".  I attempted to make a shamrock with fat-free pistachio pudding powder yesterday.  It didn't turn out as well as expected, so I switched it up today.  This time, I turned the pistachio pudding into a paste (HMR diet-friendly) and painted a shamrock onto wax paper.  The shamrock set in the freezer while I went for a walk/run.  Then I made a blended HMR shake, let it set for about 12 minutes in the freezer, and VoilĂ !   Sham Shake!
I have been missing my California oranges as I drive by the numerous fruit stands on my daily commute to work.  That inspired my new favorite shake recipe of the week: Lemon orange cheesecake.  (Ingredients: HMR shake mix, lemon fat-free pudding mix, fat-free cheesecake pudding mix, & orange extract, water & 8+ ice-cubes blended.)  Very refreshing!  (Wouldn't it look nice with a slice of orange on the glass?)  Did you happen to notice the tulips blooming in the background?

I still am amazed that they bloom in March!  I guess I am still mentally accustom to the Midwest growing season.

I am happy to report that I met my St. Patty's Day goal of getting into the 160's!  Two weeks ago I had a minor setback on the scale.  It reflected a gain of 0.6 pounds.  My HMR educator reminded me that we can still be losing weight but not see it on the scale, due to normal fluctuations in the water that our body retains. That's why it is SO important for weight loss progress to be focused on a 4-week total, rather than week to week.  Last Thursday's weigh-in resulted in a 4.4 pound loss on the scale, for a total weight of 166!  That more than made up for the slight gain.  I have lost a grand total of 79.2 pounds, of which the last 47.9 was lost on the HMR Program.  I am one pound shy of moving from the "obese" category to the "overweight" category.  That is a huge milestone for me in my quest to get healthier!
A friend challenged me to consider running a 5K.  Although I have had knee and foot issues in the past, I have been feeling pretty good the last year or so.  I decided to give it a try and start training.  I have walked a 5K in the past, but the thought of running is daunting.  But I cannot ignore that challenge!  Today I managed to get in a 4.73 miles walk with several minute bouts of running.  It is so nice to walk outdoors when the weather is nice, and to take in all the blooms.  I started using the C25K app (Couch to 5K) that a friend recommended.  I also track my distance and speed using the Map My Ride iPhone app.  The C25K allows you to listen to your own music, while a vocal coach tells you when to run or walk.  It is designed to help get you ready for a 5K in one month.   Both apps work pretty good and both have a free version to download.

I wanted to say a special word to my friends and family who are suffering health problems right now.  Unfortunately, there are too many of you, but my heart goes out to you in your struggles.  Several people are going through surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation.  It seems so many lives are touched by cancer in one way or another.  Know that you are not alone and that you teach us how to be brave.  You teach the rest of us what it means to be strong and fight!  You teach us that whining over the little things in life is not worth it.  That we need to look at the bigger picture from time to time, and always put our best foot forward.  And as a colleague/friend put it, "It makes one take toll of the fact that each day could be your last, and, therefore it is really important to say I love you, do a kind deed, and spend time with the people in your life who really matter" (C.M.).  Sometimes we cannot always manage to be there in person, with those who matter, but there are numerous other ways to stay connected.

Be the best you that you can be today!  Be a little "selfish" with your time on occasion, taking  time out to rejuvenate & play!  Take care of you so that you can also reach out and do good for others!

Embrace Your Inner Coyote!

February was a busy month.  It was marked with preparation for several court appearances (work related), travel throughout the southern part of CA, and time spent at the hospital with my sister-in-law.  It marked some personal emotional milestones and challenges.  February sadly marked the end of an important chapter in my life.  At the same time, it brought about hope for change and growth.  I witnessed the struggles of several family and friends, as they dealt with various health, relationship, and financial issues.  Throughout it all, I also witnessed some of the most amazing stories of love, hope, and perseverance.
On one of my road trips to the southern part of the state, I was forced to stop in the middle of the road to let this coyote cross.  (At least I think it was a coyote.)  Coyotes have a reputation for being evasive.  Not this guy (gal?).  He ran across the street and stopped to analyze my mission.  I pulled over and grabbed my camera, which I rarely leave home without.  We engaged in a starring contest for several moments.  I think this one was trying to teach me that sometimes in life, you have to stop and face what comes down your road (but get to a point of safety first, if at all possible)!  You could choose to continue running, but then you might miss something really unique and/or important.  Sometimes we need to stop and take notice.  After several moments of us scoping each other out, his playmate appeared to beckon and off into the desert he pranced.  Coyotes are also known for being a bit mischievous, and I think this one decided it was playtime.  That was another valuable lesson: Don't forget to be a little mischievous in life and always embrace some playtime!
It has been about a month since my last post.  I wanted to share some statistics from my weight loss journey.  I am 76 pounds lighter than I was in 2010.  That's almost an entire small person that I lost!:

There was a slight gain in early February of less than a pound.  It is so important for people trying to lose weight to look at the overall picture and not to stress out over the slight gains or times that the scale stays the same.  The body always goes through its own adjustments of fluids.  The 4-week picture is a much more accurate gauge of success or failure.  So far, HMR has been really beneficial in helping me achieve success.  This program isn't for everyone.  It has it's challenges, but this is what I need right now.  I am happy to have found something that seems to fit me and my tastes & lifestyle so well.  And so far, it is working.  I managed to meet my St. Patrick's Day goal of getting into the 160's!  Yay!

One huge benefit to doing the Decision Free program through HMR is that it does offer a sense of stability in one part of my life where I really need it.  I actually am glad that I don't have to make other food choices at this time, especially since the month has been rather intense and stressful.  That's the beauty of this particular program.  You can lose weight without having to put much thought into it.  Just grab your meals and go!
I still manage to make my own shake recipes.  Tonight I enjoyed chocolate fudge coconut!  This recipe included HMR 800 vanilla shake mix, fat-free/sugar free chocolate fudge pudding mix, Torani sugar-free coconut syrup, ice-cubes, and water.  I must say, it was very yummy!

Well it's late so I had better get to bed.
Just remember, don't forget to embrace your inner coyote from time to time!
Happy March Everyone!

Continuing the Journey,...

On the way home from seeing my brother and Sister-in-Law this past month at the rehab hospital, I had to pull off the side of the road to take in the sunset.  It was just a short couple of minutes, but enough pause to have a moment of gratitude.  How wonderful it is to have the ability to see such sights, and to have the gift of health and mobility.  Every day is truly a gift.  At any moment, any of us could lose what we have.  We don't like to think that way, of course.  But in taking a moment to grasp that reality, one gains a sense of appreciation and respect.  When we work on improving our health, we are making a conscious choice to stick around in this world for a little longer, and savor the good things.  No, I am not talking about the "Famous Dave's" or "Golden Corral" good things.  I mean the good things in life ~ the things that are typically taken for granted  ~ in nature ~ our senses ~ and in our relationships and being human ~ those shared moments that make us laugh and smile ~ or blush ~ or those moments in which you think, "Yes, this is one for the books ~ one of those times I will never forget".  And sometimes we are faced with tough health issues: stroke, cancer, heart attack, virus, injury,...  Or a loved one is faced with such.  We often wonder "why"?  It may not seem fair.  But if there is anything positive that can be taken from these life-challenging obstacles, it is the gift of having a greater awareness of the preciousness of life and of each other, and in the strength of knowing that you can overcome.  If even in the moment, you can overcome.  You can choose to crumble under the pressure, or take a deep breath and say, "Okay, hold on!  Here we go!"  Life's hurdles challenge us to live much deeper, in a sense.

So I have a friend that keeps pestering me to go skydiving.  I have always wanted to go ~ or at least I did when I was younger.  But as I get older, I think I appreciate having my feet on the ground!  Yet, another part of me is intrigued, thinking maybe this is one of those self-inflicted obstacles where I could challenge myself to say, "Okay, hold on!  Here we go!"  (My pulse is increasing just thinking about it.)  I can imagine it is such an awesome experience to float peacefully through the sky under an opened parachute.  I am absolutely terrified about the idea of actually jumping from a plane and free falling, however!  I mean, I cannot possibly imagine loosening my grip enough to where I would actually let go.  It is a tandem jump, so I would be going with an experienced jumper.  I guess I will have to think about it.  I looked up statistics and there are roughly 30 annual deaths reported worldwide for an estimated 3 million jumps.  Not the worst record.  I have a doctor's appointment in a few weeks.  I will check in with him to see if he thinks my ticker could survive the jump (or if I can actually combat my nerves on this one).  The jump is tentatively set for March 2nd.  There's plenty of time to contemplate,...

On another note, work has been quite busy but is going well.  I have had five opportunities to testify in court as an expert witness.  Three of those five experiences have occurred within a two-week period.  (My 3rd hearing in the 2-wk period is set for next week.)  Talk about tackling performance anxiety head on!  I always experience some level of anxiety prior to getting on the stand.  Granted, it is probably not the same level of anxiety as jumping out of a plane, but it is anxiety, nevertheless.  Preparation and experience certainly do help alleviate much of the stress.  I love the feeling I get when I have successfully tackled that anxiety, and I leave the court room knowing that I did my best, made a strong case presentation, and responded appropriately to cross examination.  Next week's hearing will be challenging, but I am up for that challenge!

And speaking of challenges,...
I had a successful week on the HMR diet program!  I am down another two pounds!  And that puts me into 170-land!  Yay!  I have earned another pair of slacks.  It really feels good!!

Tonight's HMR treat was a coconut banana cheesecake smoothie.  Ingredients: HMR shake, sugar-free coconut Torani syrup, sugar-free cheesecake and banana pudding (approx. 2 tablespoons pudding mix total), water, and ice.  It was very delicious!  In an effort to continue the weight loss momentum, I decided not to use the pudding mixes every day, but they add a nice treat to the shakes on the weekend!

Update:
Well, this is interesting.  Since I started composing this blog entry, I took a break and googled the company that my friend wants me to entrust my life with re: skydiving.  Turns out they have had 3 deaths with the company (2001, 2002, and in 2009).  My friend was not aware of this record.  The parents of the young lady who died in 2009 (who was employed by the company) sued the company in 2011, claiming the equipment was old and defective.  The lawsuit also apparently referenced known on-the-job drug and alcohol use amongst the employees who pack the chutes.  Apparently the company also lied about their safety record on its website.  The Fresno Bee article can be found here.  Hmmm,...  Guess who is once again content to have her feet on the ground (for the moment, anyhow)?!  One could say it pays to do your homework!  (Or perhaps I was better off completing the jump without knowing??)  I think I may never know the answer.

Today I remind myself to honor life and take care of myself; body, mind, and spirit.
Have a great weekend!
